This strategy will encourage you to gain a deeper knowledge of word structures and word origins. A word’s derivatives and origin impact how we spell it and its meaning.

The term structured word inquiry (SWI) was coined by researcher Peter Bowers, founder of the WordWorks Literacy Centre in Ontario, Canada, to describe the process of understanding word origins and meanings. SWI investigates how a word is structured and its relationship to other words.

For example, the word does is typically taught as an irregular word. But by investigating the base word, do , we find that spelling represents the metamorphosis of the word in a familiar pattern, though the pronunciation doesn’t reflect that. Do becomes does the way that go becomes goes .

That answers a spelling question, but we can also use structured word inquiry to build an extensive vocabulary. For example, using the Latin base pend (to hang), I can create all the following words by adding prefixes and suffixes. By knowing how words are built, one is better able to understand their meaning and spelling.

sus + pend + ed → suspended

im + pend + ing → impending

ex + pend + s → expends

ap + pend + ix → appendix

de + pend + able → dependable

There’s a lot more information available about SWI. Structured word inquiry can be used with Latin roots, Greek word parts, or traditional base words. You can find some more information in the Resources .
